Consumer Search and Seller Reliability on Airbnb
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the consequences for sellers from being perceived as unreliable. We use a theoretical model to generate predictions about how information about reliability impacts sellers, and show that the e↵ect depends on the search process that consumers endogenously follow: purchasing after finding information that qualifies a product, versus purchasing after not finding information that disqualifies a product. We then test our predictions against data from Airbnb listings in Manhattan. We find evidence suggesting that consumers tend to use the former approach, and demonstrate significant costs sellers may incur from negative information about their reliability.

Digital peer-to-peer marketplaces have increased trade in underutilized assets. I use the setting of Airbnb to investigate transaction costs in peer-to-peer markets and the role of search engine design in reducing these costs. I show that search is limited, directed, and often results in the rejection of searchers by hosts due to uncertain seller availability. I document the reasons for these r...
متن کاملDoes Consumer Search Matter in Retail Trade?
This study investigates the relationship between consumer search costs, inflation, and firm markups in retail trade by employing actual measures of consumer search cost gathered by way of an online consumer survey. Consistent with theory, results indicate that markups can be higher if consumer search costs are higher. Results from panel data also show that increases in inflation lead to increas...
متن کاملInformative Narrowcasting with Consumer Search
Improved consumer addressability in electronic markets allows vendors to send focused promotional messages to specific customers, facilitating a targeted advertising approach that we call “narrowcasting”. We characterize a rational consumer’s market participation decision and identify a narrowcasting firm’s optimal targeting decision when buyers face nontrivial search costs. In the special case...
